What is a Health Coach?

Updated: Jun 29, 2019

Is it a Life Coach? Or a Personal Trainer? Think somewhere in between.

With today's technology, information is at our fingertips. Most of us would be lying if we said we've never googled "how to eat right", "how to lose my beer belly", "how to run a mile", or something closely resembling one of these phrases.

The question is: With all of this knowledge and information available to us, how do we put it into practice? How do we make our New Year's Resolution last past January 7th? How do we keep our weekly workout appointments with our neighbor without conjuring up some wild excuse to get out of it? How do we stick to our new-found health routine during our family holiday parties where there can never seem to be enough alcohol? Health Coaches are not qualified to counsel you on your deep-seated middle-child psychological turmoil. However, we are here to help you separate your food choices from your emotions that may have resulted from said turmoil.

Allow me to explain this profession in layman's terms. Health Coaches help people make lasting changes to their health habits, or lack thereof. We use a variety of methods to guide clients through lifestyle modification. I won't get into these methods or theories -- after all, I did promise layman's terms. So for now let's simplify it to these three basic concepts that most people understand: Education, Active Listening Skills, and Goal Setting. Sounds simple, right? Well, if it were that simple, we would all be at our ideal weight, have energy to boot, and basically be on cloud nine every day. Let's face it - we all need help. Some are just more willing to admit it.

We have covered the "what" and "how" of health coaching. Here's the "why". Why do I do what I do? What's in it for me? Well, if I won the lottery tomorrow, I would pay off some bills, take a two-week backpacking trip deep into the Pacific Northwest rainforest, then maybe one more week-long canoe excursion through the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness of Minnesota and Canada. I would then head right back home and start talking with people about their health and how to improve their current life situation. It's what I do. It's what I love. It does not feel like work!

Okay, now you may have a better sense of what a Health Coach does, how they do it, and why they do it. But, is health coaching effective? The answer to this question is a resounding YES! Please refer to the research below. Then continue reading.

Now, before you jump in head first with a Health Coach - you must know that it takes work and dedication on your part. Behavior change does not happen overnight. There's no beating around the bush in our profession. No lollygagging. No pussyfooting. We will call you out on your excuses. We will get down to business. Our clients get results, because we expect results from them. Rest assured, your Health Coach has your back through every step and stumble along the way.

"I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can't accept not trying."

- Michael Jordan

I would be lying if I said this is not a sales pitch. If you feel confident and ready to make significant changes to your lifestyle for the better, give us a call. Our contact information is conveniently located at the bottom of every page of this website.

Cheers!
